It has been a delight joining the wonderful team here at Calderas Counseling. As I reflect on my journey, I feel grateful for every small decision, every person, and every challenge that brought me here. Being a therapist (along with food) is my passion, and walking alongside countless individuals as they work through life’s challenges is one of the most rewarding parts of the job.
Getting here was not easy. Navigating through life’s challenges left me feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, and exhausted. As the oldest of four, I was not just dealing with my own stuff. I was also carrying the weight of paving the path for my younger siblings, my parents’ high expectations, my own high expectations, my anxieties, my fears, my losses, and everything in between. If you’re considering counseling, I can bet you’re also getting pretty tired of carrying it all alone.
Through a series of random events, some dominos cascaded in a line and I found myself in therapy. It was a somewhat strange experience at first, and also even uncomfortable. I was in a room with a stranger with the expectation that I had to bare my soul to them. I exaggerate, but that’s almost how it felt. At the end of our session though, I felt a little less heavy so I decided to come back the next week. With the help of my therapist, I experienced so much growth, and in those moments of self-discovery, I found my calling.
Not only did I find my purpose, but I also found my life’s passions. I learned I love attending concerts and sports games to cheer on my favorite teams. Cooking and trying new recipes became a really fun thing to do. Playing video games with my family had me grinning from ear to ear. I even ended up moving to a new city just to experience living by the ocean.
Counseling essentially helped me put everything I was carrying on a wagon, so I could have the energy to create a meaningful life. I married my best friend, got to do some traveling, made new friends, and now I’m pursuing a doctoral degree in counseling because I feel so passionate about mental health. Seeing my clients grow and learn and find hope again is why I love my job. I believe everyone has a strength in them to heal from the wounds that come with being human, find a purpose, and create a meaningful life.
